Mikey’s Story

On July 2, 2008 Mike and Tatiana Ricklick were blessed with the birth of their son Mike Giovanni Ricklick or Mikey as they would nickname him. Shortly after birth, Mikey was found to have decreased kidney function caused by Congenital Nephrotic Syndrome and FSGS. At 5 months old, he received his first operation to begin Peritoneal Dialysis.

The following 4 months, Mikey’s blood pressure frequently reached dangerous highs that forced The Ricklicks and a team of Nephrologists to make the drastic decision to schedule a Bi-lateral Nephrectomy (Removal of both kidneys). Upon the preparation for the operation, the doctors found a Wilms tumor on both of Mikey’s kidneys.

The surgery was a success, however, this was only the beginning of a long journey which includes chemotherapy, radiation, and serious infections. Mikey remained on dialysis for the next 5 years without kidneys. Upon reaching all the required protocols, Mikey received his kidney transplant which was donated by his mother Tatiana. Mikey is now 6 years old.

With medications and drinking plenty of water, Mikey is as healthy as a normal child. He loves playing outside with brother Logan and baby sister Kadence. His personality will make you love him at first sight, and his character will bring a smile to your face.
